computer guru's, could use some advice.
Core 2 Duo2.13 GHz 4GB RAM Radeon HD4870 1 GIG Vista home
premium, 32-bit. 650W PSU ok well, my computer is running
slow... and i'm at my wit is end to figure out what it is... i
upgraded it about a month ago, it was 2 gigs ram, and a radeon x1950 pro
extreme, and upgraded the 350W PSU to 650W (everything else the same) but
l also bought a 17'' LCD monitor before the upgrade my computer ran faster then it is now... so l really do not know what to do anymore.... it is most noticable in gaming... on my previous system loading a BF2 map took about half as long as it is taking now... i've cleaned my computer, both with air duster on the components (yes heat sink included) and with spybot search and destroy, AVG, ccleaner, regseeker, and defragged. i've updated my page file size after upgrading my ram, l never have background programs running, all my computer starts with is what is needed to run the OS, i've fixed the 'heat issue' with the 4870 (the temps were within what the manufacturer said was safe, but still, those temps (50c idle and 80+ load) were worrisome. [they say the card is made to run at 90c or above]) my new PSU even is far more ventilated with a 120mm fan, i've watched temps, so it is not temps... my computer is clean as can be, and still i'm experiencing alot of lag... /> FIRST l need to know what my page file should be set at (total, l have two HDD's...just incase l put the wrong size) next maybe someone can help me figure out what the problem is... upgrading anything more is not even a possibility.... we've dropped well over a thousand in the past few weeks between my wife getting a new comp, and all the upgrades to mine... besides, like l said, this same computer was running certain games just fine with NO PROBLEM what-so-ever, and now that i've went through all these updates, it is running noticably slower.
Your processor is pretty slow for gaming. You should probably
upgrade your processor if you want to have better gaming. Sometimes your
processor can bottlecap how good everything else can perform. I would say
a dual core that is at least 2.5ghz should cover you.
Let Windows manage ur page file size. Seriously.
The rule of thumb 10 years ago was to set it to 1.5 times the size of ur
RAM, but that was when people ran Windows 98 with 64MB of RAM. Vista
actually has a pretty good memory manager, & with the amount of memory
computers have these days, it is common to not even need a page file (even
my aging laptop, with 3/4GB of RAM, hasn't started paging anything to disk
since I last booted a couple of weeks ago). It is true that there is a small performance hit when Windows has to re-size the page file, but as fast & infrequent as it is, it is a small price to pay for the security of knowing that you won't get an out-of-memory error.
As a rule, your pagefile should be 1.5 times the amount of RAM
you have. So if you have 2GB your page file should be 3GB. 4GB RAM, then
6GB page file.
